Background info:
Bordered in the north by the mountains and in the south gradually changing to grass before it hits the jungle area. Roughly same climate as Cardina. There is a roughly north-south river cutting it in half and most of the big towns would be along there, may be trade along the river.
(so the image i get from this is egypt and the nile etc?)

Few ideas of the top of my head which I can see several applications for and would thrive in hot conditions.. dry or more near the river:

Prickly Pear Cactus (fruit and vegetable «leaves/pods» in 1)
Barrel Cactus Fruit
Banana Yucca Fruit (can be made into flat cakes or used as replacement for sweet potato in recipes)
Desert Gourd (seeds can be used to make oil, gourds could be crafting material)
Honey Mesquite (see woodcut section)
Agave
Pinto Beans
Piņon Nuts
Olives
Rice Plant (both as a source for paper fiber and food)

Speed:
Not much I can think of right away. Not much possible either? Perhaps an alternate route somewhere with quicksand (or just a real loose sand area) or something that requires a higher speed level to be able to traverse it for more xp? Speed lvl 50 req?
Trading:
May be trade along the river..? Not too sure what to think of this. There will be a npc shop or market or something?
Woodcutting:
A “new” forest in the southern region with 1~7 Logs, Ironwood drops and 50/20 Skill/Char XP?
Honey Mesquite trees have ironwood, provide bean pods which can be made into meal (flour mill), jelly could be made out of them if at some point we get a citrus fruit (pectin). Furthermore, its flowers may be used to produce mono-floral honey.
Also Cacti may grow underneath ironwood trees which could provide Prickly Pears (cactus fruit) drops?
