My suggestion is to do a quest or two while getting started.

The first one you can do is the two brothers at Ponat Pier. Click on the town name and you will get the orange type of the quest to appear for you. It will take while, get you experience in the game and help you familiarize yourself with the game. It also can be done without building a house to store stuff in. And when you are done with the quest you may have an idea where you want to build your house.
